Marblehead, a town in love with liberty and rugged individualism. Its people and history, its crooked lanes and irregular houses, its customs and humor defy conformity and dullness. The irreligious settlers, the adventurous fishermen, the zealous patriots of 1776, the daring privateers of 1812, the clipper ship captains and yesteryear’s fish peddlers imbued their town with a spirit as hardy as the rocky peninsula itself.”

Today, Marblehead Harbor boasts one of the finest displays of sailing craft anywhere. Over the years the harbor has been both the starting and finishing port for numerous international races, including races between Marblehead and Kiel, Germany; San Sebastian, Spain; and Bermuda, as well as other national and international competitions. An annual race between Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Marblehead, which began in 1905, continues to this day. And the yearly mid-summer Marblehead Race Week competition, which dates back to 1889, still attracts yachtsmen from around the world. Marblehead, appropriately, has earned the title as the “Yachting Capital of the World.”

Marblehead’s seafaring history also played an important role in the formation of our great nation. Becoming disenchanted with the control and increasing taxation that the British were imposing over the colonies, locals were readying themselves for a revolt.

]]>3 shot HDR handheld bracket shot of the Old Town House, built in 1727, is often referred to as "Marblehead's Cradle of Liberty"; for the many pre-revolutionary war meetings held there. It is one of the oldest town halls in America that has been in continuous use.
The upper level of the building served as a town hall, while the lower level was originally used as a market. The upstairs is still used as a town hall, but the lower level is the location of the Marblehead Police Museum. During the American Revolution notable proponents of liberty such as Elbridge Gerry and General John Glover debated independence in the building. The Old Town House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

]]>This series of shots was taken early one morning while the Greater Lynn Photo association was at Motif #1 photographing the sunrise. I decided to forsake the sunrise for a shot of the photographers on the quay to the right of Motif #1, photographing the sunrise...

Rockport is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,952 at the 2010 census. Rockport is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Boston at the tip of the Cape Ann peninsula. It is directly east of Gloucester, Massachusetts and surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean.

Motif #1
A red fishing shack on Bradley Wharf in Rockport, known as 'Motif Number 1', has for years been one of the most famous sites on Cape Ann, at first as the subject of hundreds of paintings, then as it became well known, as a site to be photographed and visited by tourists from all over the world. Rockport is also the home of the Rockport Art Association.
